Today Hugo Chavez began his UN speech by holding up a copy of "Hegemony or Survival: Americas Quest for Global Dominance" and suggesting that Americans read it instead of watching Superman and Batman movies which make people stupid.

Within one day, the three year old book by linguist and political commentator Noam Chomsky, had become Amazons number three bestseller. Within two days it was number one.

Until recently this phenomenon has been the preserve of Oprah Winfrey. However Chavez did drop one blooper when he said in a news conference after his speech that he regretted not having met Chomsky when he was alive. Chomksy who at 77, has retired from full time teaching at MIT, is very much alive an well, was reported to have said "I continue to work and write" and noted that this landed him amongst an exclusive group of famous person reported dead before their time.
