Did you know that there are only three dominions in the world in which commercial banks are allowed to issue bank notes. They are Hong Kong, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This can lead to the issuing of some rather interesting commemorative currency as central banks seem to be more conservative in their choices of icon.
Last year the Royal Bank of Scotland produced a limited-issue banknote to honour Jack Nicklaus' last appearance at the British Open. On Thursday Northern Ireland's Ulster Bank announced that it would be issuing 1 million new £5 notes to commemorate Irish soccer legend George Best, who died last year.
